SiPOW AS has been awarded with the First Place at the RareEarth Innovation Challenge, Italy.
Rare earth elements (REEs), essential for both high-technology and low-carbon economies,
are growing increasingly indispensable. As societies strive for sustainable socioeconomic
progress with reduced reliance on fossil fuels, the global demand for REEs keeps climbing,
notwithstanding the uncertainties surrounding their supply chain and the environmentally impactful
production processes. Hence, it is imperative to investigate innovative technologies for extracting Rare Earth Elements from waste streams.
The Challenge Rare Earth Metals focused on energy and circular economy frontier for sustainalbility;
specifically, it focused on finding innovative solutions aiming at
separating and recycling rare earth elements from photovoltaic cells.
Coordinator: SiPOW AS
Main Focus Areas:
- Development of cost-efficient dismantling lines aimed at the liberation of the Critical Raw Materials, REE rich fraction included
- Development of recovery processes based on the use of green/biodegradable/low-cost solvents
- Development of closed-loop recycling processes aimed at obtaining high-purity products to be possibly reintegrated in the same or other production cycles
- Identification of alternative materials to rare earths to be used in the production of photovoltaic panels
